Un libro illustrato racconta la prima visita di un bambino a un museo d’arte

The Gift di Page Tsou è giunto a me letteralmente come un dono. Il dono del viso imbronciato di un Unhappy boy che mi ha guardata negli occhi dalla seconda pagina. Con una cicala sul petto a tenergli compagnia. L’ho considerato un richiamo a leggere la sua storia. Glielo dovevo.

Tsou, l’autore, è un affermato visual artist che vive a Taipei e ha lavorato per marchi come Disney, Yamaha, GQ, Elle, pluripremiato come illustratore negli Stati Uniti e a Taiwan.
Proprio con quest’opera ha ottenuto un riconoscimento anche all’ultima edizione della Bologna Children Book Fair, per la sezione arte.

Non esiste ancora un’edizione italiana del volume che è stato pubblicato originariamente dal Taipei Fine Arts Museum nel 2014, quindi leggerlo, o meglio, osservarlo (le brevi didascalie sono tutte in cinese e i titoli dei capitoli in inglese), è stato come approcciarsi ad un silent book: la stessa potenza espressiva senza la necessità di alcun segno scritto, se non il di-segno.

The gift racconta, attraverso canoni tutt’altro che convenzionali, la prima esperienza di un bambino in un Museo d’Arte, accompagnato dai genitori che gli hanno regalato, appunto, il biglietto.
Già davanti all’ingresso ogni più piccola emozione è così carica di senso che tutto acquista un aspetto fantasmagorico. Un turbamento così sconvolgente e introspettivo da scatenare in maniera vertiginosa la sua fantasia.

La bellezza di questo libro, che online si può acquistare su Amazon, è che una volta chiuso ci si chiede se in realtà la visita guidata all’interno delle sale museali non sia stata piuttosto il sogno ad occhi aperti fatto nell’attesa del proprio turno in coda.
Il finale, per incapacità di tradurre le didascalie, è assolutamente aperto. Ma poi, è così importante?

Unica certezza: l’espressione felice ed estasiata del protagonista la cui immaginazione continuerà a crescere ed alimentarsi anche lungo il tragitto in macchina verso casa.
